Feeling hopeless? Tired? Frustrated? Wondering “Is there any help for overcoming addictions?”
As a guest writer on “Morning Blessings with Crystal Dixon” I would like to introduce myself. I am Pastor Mike Dixon, brother-in-law to Crystal, but I am also a recovered drug addict and alcoholic. I have been clean and sober for over 30 years. My heart’s burden is to reach out to others who may be struggling under addiction to help them find lasting recovery. This led to the founding of LIFE Ministries, a 501c3 nonprofit, which began in March, 2017. Before I share about this incredible Christ centered addiction recovery program, allow me to briefly explain addictions from a spiritual perspective:
We understand and affirm that God, our Creator, has designed us with a great inner need to worship. We were in fact created to worship Him. If we do not worship God, we will by default worship someone or something else. That someone or something else becomes our god.
Addiction from a biblical perspective is idolatry, the worship of false gods. There are many things that can become an idol in our lives. Let me ask you, “What is it that consumes your thoughts, demands your time and attention, and utilizes your resources (finances, energy, etc)? If it is not the God of the Bible, the Creator of all creation, then you are worshipping at the altar of a false god.
We are created for a purpose. God tells us exactly what that purpose is in His Word:
1 Corinthians 10:31 (NKJV)
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
Colossians 3:17 (NKJV)
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
THERE IS HOPE FOR CHANGE
If we find ourselves living for a purpose other than to honor and glorify God we may be bound in an addiction. The good news that God offers is that there is a way out of addiction. The Gospel of Christ offers us the power we need to experience lasting and life-long change.
The Apostle Paul, writing to the church at Corinth, named many addictive sins that at one time were present in the lives of those to whom he was writing:
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV)
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
Many of the Christians at Corinth had suffered from sexual addictions, substance abuse, and criminal addictive behavior. Paul calls many of these addictions by name. Then Paul offers the key for lasting change in the next verse:
1 Corinthians 6:11 (NKJV)
“And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”
We have the same God today that the people in Corinth had. Our Lord has not changed! Just as the people at Corinth had been transformed by the power of God, so can you!
Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV)
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
