Today is Palm Sunday.
This is the day we celebrate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem as the King of Kings.
Jesus had just finished travelling around teaching and healing. Jesus knew his ministry was almost over; Jesus told his disciple he would be put to death, but he would rIse again in three days. Now, it was time to proclaim His identity as the Messiah.
The news of his miracles had become well known even in Jerusalem. On this particular Sunday, the city was over flowing with people awaiting the Passover feast and celebration. Before arriving, Jesus sent two of disciples to a neighboring village to get a donkey that would be there. Jesus entered Jerusalem on the back of that donkey.
There is something significant about Jesus and the donkey. It was fulfilling a prophecy told by Zechariah many years before : “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. “Zechariah 9:9
The crowds responded with with joy and praise spreading coats on the ground in front of Jesus and waving branches of palm trees, shouting:
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord –
the King of Israel!”
The people wanted a king and they wanted Jesus to be that king . However, they were seeking a leader to gree them from tyranny. They did not understand that the
Kingdom of God. They did not understand that Jesus is not of the world.
But in a few days, the whole world would see Jesus die for the expansion his kingdom. We become part of His kingdom when we put our trust in Him and acknowledge Him as our Lord and Savior. (John 3:16)
